  Before the Bell

Wow after last week’s inside look at the behind the closed doors of Rockin-Rick, a look behind the curtin of the rich and famous Roto- royalty-rulers your Scribe is on Pins and needles with anticipation to see what attire Rockin-Rick will show up in at today's sacred meeting.

Personally I'm hoping that he shows up today with Jim Morrison.... That kind of goes along with the empty Jack Daniels bottles as reported in last week’s Roto-news.

The's weather is iffy.  Many Rotarians are seen arriving with umbrellas…….just in case.

Entering the Roto-palace everybody seems to be of good cheer today.
Your Scribe goes to the podium to get the notes for the meeting.  I ask Rockin-Rick for a copy of today's meeting outline.

Rick looks at me sheepishly and says “didn't Cindy send you The outline last night?”  When my answer is no he sheepishly shows me some scribbled notes and says, “Cindy's out of town last night and today & she didn't get a chance to get it done."  So I stare at the abbreviated notes and ask……  “So we're winging it right?” and the answer is “yes.”

So for full disclosure here I announced to you………  [I am winging it with Rockin-Rick today –Scribe.]

  At the Bell
Rick slammed the mallet down on the sacred bill at exactly 12:16 pm to start the meeting and to ask Mark Fink to lead the Pledge of Allegiance.

In a voice that needs no amplification our leader called Keller McDonald to lead us in song.  Keller was so excited about a snowy owl visit in Humboldt County that he almost forgot to sing the song.

I was so engrossed in the details of the snowy owl adventure that I have completely forgotten what the song was however it started out quite well and then as Keller went into the third fourth and fifth verses it kind of petered out. ……………. at the end it was just Keller singing.

Hallelujah! I have just remembered the song. "This land is your land this land is my land from the Snowy Owl in Orygone to the Mallard ducks of the Laguna...... Or something close to that.

Next up at Rockin-Ricks bidding was Harry Simms with two thoughts for the day.
 Thought number one…..
" Don't let yesterday use up too much of today."

Thought number two……
"Resentment is like taking poison and expecting the other person to die."

  Green Badge to Red

Back to our leader who bellows without need of a microphone………… Back like a bad Barito”…….. May I introduce to you our newest red badge members; Jeff Boal and Rick Williams…..?  Jeff got his Red Badge in two weeks…..  and Rick Williams got his in two years, or so.

That's what's so great about Rotary…..  we all have our own styles tastes and timelines…………and it all seems to work out just fine.

  Visiting Rotarians and Guests

The voice, Bud Daveiro, announced visiting Rotarians……. there was but one, the ever present Dan Bornstein, Santa Rosa dentist.

Richard Powers was startled and quit making phone calls when he was asked to announce his guest Lawrence Jaffe who spoke to the club recently about the Grange.

Jack Dunlap introduced his wife Ruth

Harry Simms introduced his wife Susanna.

  Rotary Tag Team

Rockin-Rick then called Frank Mayhew to the podium to continue the tag-team-talks.

Frank was born in Los Angeles in 1938.  After serving in the Marines Frank started studies at Cal poly first in architectural drafting, then business administration and then industrial technology.

Frank was a D.J. at school.  He met Kathie in 1958 and after giving it some thought married Kathie in 1994!!  Frank has never been known to make really quick decisions; he's much like a Norwegian bachelor farmer he has to ponder everything for years.

Frank has two sons who live nearby.  He and Kathie have 12 grandchildren.

Frank's vocations have been application engineer, electronic designer of hospital electronics, a contractor with temperature control, a consultant with temperature controls & now a full time philanthropist & Rotarian.  He and Kathie started an ending poverty program with "one village at a time."

Kathie started The Ant Hill Foundation bringing health and hygiene to local maternity wards in Africa.

Apparently Frank wants to get back in the game because he just joined a new business called Resynegi which will recycle plastic wastes into high efficiency fuels.
  Announcements

Rockin-Rick then read a letter from Tom Farrell's son expressing the family’s appreciation for engaging Tom in the Rotary World till the end of his life.

Keller McDonald returns to the podium to talk about the Cobb Mountain elementary school garden.  Keller was the school’s first principle from 1985 to 1989.  During his term of principal-ship Keller started a school garden which is still heavily used today.

Keller told us that one third of the students and one half of the teachers in Middletown lost their homes to the Valley fire.

Brook Haven School recently held a fundraising jog-a-thon and raised $5,000!! that sent the entire 6th grade to the Alliance Redwoods for the outdoor education program.

Les Crawford and Donna Pantzer came to the podium to announce that Friday, April 8 the meeting will be the Overcoming Obstacles meeting. They asked the attendees for 6 - $200 scholarship sponsorships for the event to cover the cost of the participant’s prizes.

Instantly more than the six required hands shot to the air and the costs were covered.  [Gotta love this Roto-club! --Scribe]

Henry Alker had the winning ticket number and pulled the Ace of Spades to win the pot [Note to IRS - $175 –Ed.]  New pot next week.

Joe Pozzi -- Gold Ridge Resource Conservation District

Harry Polley introduced Joe Pozzi, the District Manager of the Gold Ridge Resource Conservation District (RCD.)

The principals developed for the districts are a direct result of the late 1930’s dust bowls where poor soil management and drought ruined many farmers lives.  Our local Gold Ridge Resource Conservation District was formed in 1941.

The conservation districts are divided by watersheds with the majority of our Gold Ridge conservation district being held in private property ownership.  Our district is defined by the boundaries of the Russian River on the North and Marin County to the South.

The Gold Ridge RCD has no regulation authority.  They help landowners and agencies meet their regulatory requirements and help guide the development of regulations. Federal & State grants comprise 95-98 % of the district’s funding.  The Gold Ridge RCD projects include education, monitoring & planning, pollinator habitat, regulation compliance, soil conservation and health.

Joe said that water is the most critical resource issue of our lifetimes.  Mark Twain said in the mid-1800’s, “Whiskey is for drinken………..Water’s fer fighten.” …….  [Hence the empty Jack Daniels bottles. -Scribe]

Water catchment and storage systems are a recent focus of the RCD because they directly reduce ground water and surface water diversion for irrigation and other uses.  Reductions in ground water usage in sensitive watersheds such as Green Valley Creek will improve the survival of salmon and steelhead during dry years.

One tidbit of information about water catchment that caught the attention of your Scribe is that for every every 1” of water that falls on 1,000 sq. ft. of roofing, 637 gallons of water can be captured.

Who would have thought we’d be thinking about capturing rainwater in our lifetimes?.............
