Chief Contreras was born at Kaiser Hayward in 1974 and spent entire life in the East Bay. He worked for Cal Fire during college and then hired in the first Paramedic Firefighter class in the Hayward Fire Department in 1996. As a second generation member of the Fire Service, he has a strong dedication to the Fire Service as a profession. Chief Contreras promoted through the ranks at the Hayward Fire Department holding ranks of Firefighter/Paramedic, Captain, Battalion Chief, Deputy Fire Chief and now Fire Chief since 2012.  He has been the Op Area Coordinator for Alameda County for 9 years managing all mutual aid coming into Alameda County or from Alameda County going to other counties. He has responded as a Strike Team Leader to the Juliann Fire (San Diego 2003, Camp Fire 2017, San Bruno Gas explosion, as well as numerous assignments in Sonoma/ Napa fires in the last few years. This Fire Training Center is a career long aspiration for Chief Contreras, with a passion for training and Firefighter safety/health.  This training center will help supply the next generation of well trained experts to respond to all risk events throughout the region, state and country. The Hayward Fire Department is an all risk fire department that responds to advanced life support medical aids, structure fires, vegetation fires, Hazardous Materials spills, vehicle accidents, water rescue, trench rescue, heavy rescue etc. The HFD is part of FEMA Urban Search and Rescue Task Force and a major mutual contributor to other jurisdictions.
